What is Language Coaching? And how it it different to Language Teaching?
Language coaching centres the learner and their specific goals. These goals may be short term professional goals, or preparation to live in a country where English is the main language of communication. For others it is the desire to have a space within which to practice using English comfortably for long term improvement.
The Language Coach
An excellent language coach will have many years as a language teacher and will already have developed a coaching style when working with professionals and older students in one-one settings. He or she will be an expert linguist and have a deep knowledge of the language and of how different learners learn and gain confidence. A language coach will also have a deep understanding of the variety of different skills involved in improving language acquisition including finer listening skills and pronunciation.
How does it work?
The language coach supports you to discover how you learn best and creates a safe environment within which you can experiment, practice and engage in English. The coach does not use a fixed method and curriculum but rather follows your lead and encourages you to find an approach most effective and comfortable for you. The language coach will give you feedback, advice and useful information when you ask for it. Some learners prefer to aim for uninterrupted fluency and only want feedback at the end of a session or course. Others prefer more frequent intervention. Coaching gives you the space to discover which approach is best for you.
Your Role
The agenda is set by you. An excellent language coach is a good listener and is sensitive to your ways of learning. He or she will be able to talk about and listen to you talk about anything, and become engaged and interested in your world. Language coaching allows the learner to break from habits of past language learning and learn ways to make fast independent progress.
Reports and Presentations
Your language coach can work with you to you prepare a professional report or presentation, or practice presenting in an interview for a new position.
